Early Inpatient Palliative Care Improves Survival, Cuts Costs

CHICAGO—Patients with advanced cancer who receive early inpatient palliative care have longer median survival, shorter hospital length of stay, and are more likely to be discharged home than those receiving standard oncologic care, according to a retrospective cohort analysis presented at the 2019 annual meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology. The study also found that inpatient palliative care also significantly reduced costs.
