Blood conservation is being embraced by a growing number of medical centers with the goal of improving patient outcomes and reducing costs. Based on a presentation at the Society for the Advancement of Blood Management annual meeting in September 2009, this monograph will summarize the benefits of a blood management program and review strategies for implementation.

Adult Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP): A Review of the Disease
Idiopathic, or immune, thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) is an autoimmune disorder usually characterized by increased platelet destruction and suboptimal platelet production. ITP results in diminished platelet levels and an increased risk for minor and major bleeding events. Approximately 200,000 individuals in the United States have ITP.

Seven years ago, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) report To Err Is Human: Building a Safer Health System revealed that US hospitals and other healthcare institutions were not the models of safe medical practices that most Americans assumed they were. Indeed, injuries caused by events that had nothing to do with patients’ medical conditions were hardly uncommon.
