Biosensor Aims To Improve CML Therapy
ISSUE: SEPTEMBER, 2010
The use of imatinib (Gleevec, Novartis) and other tyrosine kinase inhibitors for the treatment of chronic myeloid leukemia is expected to become a great deal more patient-directed because of a newly developed BCR-ABL biosensor. read more
In Multiple Myeloma, Maintenance Therapy After Transplant Improves PFS
ISSUE: AUGUST, 2010
Maintenance therapy with lenalidomide (Revlimid, Celgene) greatly improves progression-free survival (PFS) in patients with multiple myeloma after autologous stem cell transplantation, according to two large, multicenter Phase III trials. The similarity of the outcomes, which are considered to have immediate relevance to clinical practice, was remarkable. read more
Novel Vincristine Formulation Improves Outcomes in ALL
ISSUE: AUGUST, 2010
A liposomal formulation of vincristine (Marqibo, Hana Biosciences) is active in adult patients with refractory or relapsed Philadelphia chromosome-negative acute lymphoblastic leukemia, according to a Phase II trial presented at the recent American Society of Clinical Oncology meeting. read more
Battle of Second-Generation TKIs Declared in CML
ISSUE: JULY, 2010
Second-generation tyrosine kinase inhibitors appear likely to replace imatinib (Gleevec, Novartis) as first-line therapy in previously untreated chronic myelogenous leukemia. New data from separate head-to-head Phase III trials have demonstrated that both nilotinib (Tasigna, Novartis) and dasatinib (Sprycel, Bristol-Myers Squibb) are superior to imatinib for major prognostic indicators, particularly complete molecular and cytogenetic responses. read more
New Standard of Care Proposed for Follicular Lymphoma
ISSUE: JULY, 2010
Clinicians have a new standard of care for patients with previously untreated follicular lymphoma, according to results from the PRIMA Phase III trial. The study found that maintenance therapy with rituximab (Rituxan, Genentech/Biogen Idec) significantly improved two-year progression-free survival (PFS). read more
Retrospective Analysis Determines that Older, Higher-Risk MDS Patients Benefit From Transplant
ISSUE: JUNE, 2010
A retrospective analysis has validated the use of allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT) in elderly patients with myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS). read more
Omacetaxine Promising for Patients With CML
ISSUE: JUNE, 2010
In patients with chronic myeloid leukemia who have stopped responding to tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs), a new drug called omacetaxine (Omapro, ChemGenex) may extend survival. read more
Retrospective Study Cannot Determine Benefit of HSCT
ISSUE: JUNE, 2010
Harry Erba, MD, PhD, associate professor of internal medicine at the University of Michigan, provides an expert opinion on a transplant study in patients with myelodysplastic syndromes. read more
